Protect Natural Stone With Durable Sealing
Limestone, travertine, sandstone, bluestone, granite. Natural stone brings a warmth and character that concrete simply can’t match. But most stone is porous, and that’s the catch. Left unsealed, it drinks in oil, wine, grease and moisture, and once a stain sets into stone, it’s often there for good.
At Surface Rescue, we seal natural stone across Adelaide with premium, breathable products chosen specifically for each stone type. The result is a surface that resists staining, salt attack and weathering, without altering the look you fell in love with.

Stone Surfaces We Seal
Across Adelaide
We seal a wide range of natural stone surfaces, including:
Travertine & Limestone
A popular choice around Adelaide pools and alfresco areas. We use breathable penetrating sealers that block damage without changing the honed or tumbled finish.
Sandstone
Soft and highly absorbent, sandstone benefits enormously from sealing. It slows moss and mould regrowth and stops dirt from working deep into the surface.
Bluestone & Granite
Denser stones still benefit from protection. We select sealers suited to low-porosity stone so the product actually bonds rather than sitting on top.
Retaining and feature walls
Vertical stonework is exposed to constant weather. Sealing helps prevent water ingress, efflorescence and the grimy streaking that builds up over time.

Why Stone Needs the Right Sealer
Here’s the thing about sealing stone: it’s less forgiving than concrete. Apply the wrong product to travertine or limestone and you can trap moisture, cause discolouration, or leave a plastic-looking film that ruins the natural finish. Some stones are acid-sensitive. Some are dense and barely absorb anything. Others soak sealer up like a sponge.
That’s why we never take a one-size-fits-all approach. We identify your stone, test how it responds, and select a penetrating sealer designed for that material. We know what works for each stone type, and we don’t guess.

Frequently Asked
Questions
- I've seen sealers go milky or start peeling over time. Do yours do that?
No, and here’s why.
That cloudy or peeling look usually happens with older-style, solvent-based sealers, the kind you’ll often find at hardware stores. Those sealers sit on top of the surface and don’t let the stone breathe. So when moisture pushes up from below it gets trapped, and the sealer goes milky, bubbles or peels off.
Stone is less forgiving than concrete. The wrong product on travertine or limestone can trap moisture, cause discolouration, or leave a plastic-looking film that ruins the natural finish. That’s why we identify your stone, test how it responds, and select a breathable penetrating sealer designed for that material. It soaks in rather than forming a skin on top, so moisture can still pass through.
No hazing. No peeling. No headaches.
- How often should I reseal my stone surfaces?
It depends on the stone and how much use the area gets, but every 3–5 years is a good rule of thumb.
High-traffic areas like entries and paved driveways usually need resealing closer to the 3-year mark. Sheltered or lighter-use stone can go 5 years or more. Porosity makes a difference too: soft, absorbent stone like sandstone behaves very differently to dense bluestone or granite.
The sealers we use are high-quality penetrating products built to last, not cheap coatings that flake off in a year. We’ll give you advice specific to your stone once the job’s done, so you’ll know when to plan for a reseal.
- What maintenance does a sealed surface need?
Sealing makes natural stone much easier to live with, but it isn’t set and forget.
You’ll still need to clean up spills as they happen, especially oil, wine and grease, and give the area a solid clean once a year. Spills matter more on stone than most surfaces, because once a stain sets into stone it’s often there for good.
We’ll also let you know what to keep away from your particular stone, since some types are acid-sensitive and react badly to the wrong cleaner.
- I want to change the colour of my stone, will your sealers do that?
Only if you want it to, and even then it’s an enhancement rather than a colour change. You’ve got three options:
- Natural Look. Our most popular choice for stone. Fully penetrating, completely invisible, zero shine. Your stone looks exactly as it did and simply behaves better.
- Enhanced / Satin. Gently deepens the stone’s natural colour and adds a soft sheen. Suits denser stones where a richer tone is wanted.
- Wet Look. A deeper, darkened finish using Guard Industry Wet Finish Premium, rated to last 10 years rather than the 12–24 months you’ll get from budget products.
A sealer won’t turn your stone a different colour the way paint would. We’ll talk you through which finish suits your stone before anything goes down.
- What's the difference between the sealers you use and the ones from the hardware store?
It comes down to quality, performance and peace of mind. Cheaper hardware store sealers look like a good deal upfront, but they come with a lot of risk:
- They’re sold as one product for every surface, when travertine, limestone, sandstone, bluestone and granite all need something different
- They’re moisture-sensitive, so if the stone isn’t perfectly dry the sealer can haze or fail straight away
- They’re not breathable, so trapped moisture turns them milky or makes them peel
- They don’t penetrate well, so they sit on top and can actually make the surface more slippery
- They’re loaded with solvents, so they stink out the area while they’re going down and curing
And if a cheap sealer fails on stone, fixing it is a serious job. It has to be stripped off without damaging the stone, then the surface re-cleaned and resealed properly. Far more expensive than doing it right the first time.
We choose sealers for your specific stone and make them for long-term performance: low VOC, breathable, properly penetrating, and slip-conscious.
- Why should I seal my outdoor surfaces?
Because most natural stone is porous, and that’s the catch. Left unsealed, it drinks in oil, wine, grease and moisture, and once a stain sets into stone, it’s often there for good.
What sealing gives you:
- Better stain resistance, so spills can be wiped up before they soak in
- Protection from salt attack, weathering and UV
- Slower moss and mould regrowth, and dirt that can’t work deep into the surface
- Retaining and feature walls protected from water ingress, efflorescence and grimy streaking
- The look you fell in love with, kept that way for years longer
It won’t make the stone bulletproof, and you’ll still need to clean it, but it makes maintenance far easier and protects an expensive surface.
- Does sealing make a surface slippery when wet?
It can if you use the wrong product. A glossy or solvent-heavy sealer from the hardware store sits on top of the stone and can leave a film that’s more slippery than no sealer at all.
All our stone sealers are low VOC, breathable, and slip-conscious, and our most popular finish is fully penetrating with zero shine, so no glaze sits on the surface. Around pools and alfresco areas, sealing also slows the algae build-up that makes stone slippery in the first place.
